I don't agree about one or the other. declan showed again yesterday that he's more than capable of pushing forward and contributing, as has downes in the european games. fuck waiting until man u or palace, downes should be starting wednesday

That could be a possibility during that time frame where we're playing the last two ECL games, seen as there's nothing really riding on them and the result 'doesn't matter'. (Provided we don't lose both and Silkeborg don't win both) They'll be on the bench anyway.

That would allow us to have Downes and Rice playing together against Man U or Palace which would be very interesting to see. Likely there might be opportunities as well to see them together if we get to a point in the season where we are only playing one game a week.

But while there are two games a week that matter, (probably most of the remainder of the season) I think he'll likely opt for Rice OR Downes, and if you're thinking holistically and logically about a run of games, which you should do over games in isolation, then it's hard to really argue with it too much. You can't effectively give away a bunch of games by having Soucek and Lanzini start them as the pairing. Besides which it won;t even placate anyone as while there will be people happy Rice and Downes play together, the same people will be doing their nut when neither starts.

At what point does Moyes become accountable for spending 180 mil without improving us, and not even improving the style of play/ambition? The new bloke can't be impressed? I heard a stat before yesterday that we had lost 9 of our last 12 away games. Surely that must tell someone even as arrogant as Moyes that he's setting up wrong, or is it all the refs and var's fault?

If it wasn't for being in Europe, this season would already be looking grim, as it is that is a bit of a lifesaver in the background and some hope to cling onto to.

Is anyone looking forward to Wednesday?

scorch, well rotate him in to the european team and downes can start the league games. at the moment we're averaging just over a point a game and I don't see that improving on wednesday given how he lines us up and approaches games

Or if Scamacca could finish 1 of his umpteen chances.

Spot on. It would also help if Paqueta could nod a ball on target from 6 yards.

The reason is squad rotation. The thing we were all crying out for last season, and what we all think was the reason for our poor end to the season. Downes is here to be the Rice alternative when Rice is rested or injured. And sadly his likely successor if/when he leaves. The fact that he's playing really well already is fantastic, but he's not going to be put in the first team as first choice because it's just not his role (yet)

You can't constantly use players twice a week for several weeks, and if he pairs Rice and Downes together, then you've got Soucek and Lanzini starting games together. No thanks.

We have 8 games coming up in 25 days. We've learned running players into the ground doesn't work. Of course we'd all like the strongest 11 to be trotted out every game but it just doesn't work like that when there are so many games in a short space of time. He will get his chance in the Premier League sooner or later, either alongside Rice or Soucek or another player.

And in the Europe the game beforehand.

He’s gonna lose the ball now and again. It’s part of taking chances trying through balls and taking a gamble. I like him and he’s only going to get better and better.

What has Fabianski done wrong to deserve being dropped? I still rate him as an excellent 'keeper and he made some splendid saves yesterday.

Next summer is the time to get rid of him and make Areola first choice keeper.

Agree with all of that, Canvey

We all know we shouldn’t have Fabianski Cresswell, Antonio or the two Czechs in the starting line up any more, but injuries and a stubborn manager have both hamstrung us so far this season

Negative set up cost us the win.

Sat back like we always do. Gave a crap Southampton side 70% possession. They score a flukey goal and only then do we decide to start playing to try and win the game.

We were the better team and had enough chances in the end to get the 3 points but once again we start poorly.

absolute nonsense. the lad is 23 and has hardly played this season (just three starts). there's no reason he couldn't have played yesterday other moyes refusal to start certain players. benrahma's another, notice how better we played when he came on?

Downes played 90 mins on Thursday and Rice/Soucek 30 mins each. Of course Downes wasn't going to start yesterday.

I suspect given Downes excellent performances/progress as a sort of 'Rice lite' (and I mean that as a big compliment) when we have 2 games every week we are more likely to see them alternating rather than playing together so at least in every game there's that strong midfield anchor. (Again- I see that as a compliment to Downes from Moyes. He trusts him enough to rest Rice) They probably won't play together all that much until we get to one game a week.

Be interesting to see what he does on Wednesday though. Can't see Rice being rested for Liverpool for obvious reasons.

I took my grandsons to their first ever live game yesterday (seeing as how they are 9 and 13 it shows what a waste of space my ex-son in law was not taking them) and had to go in the home end. Quite fun watching our lot in the away end again. Anyway, we should have won that but once again Dismal Dave, respecting the fucking point, picked his favourites and defended against a woeful side at the bottom of the table. Did my best to remain neutral but when Dec scored realised I was the only one standing up but its Southampton so I got a couple of "would you mind sitting down" and i think I got shusshed by a few people. I was terrified.

Anyway, everyone was saying Scamacca was the best player on the pitch and Benny changed the game in the second. Shame there seems to be this FA rule that says Scamacca and Antonio are not allowed on the pitch at the same time or we could have been in danger of winning that game. Not looking forward to the journey or the match against the scousers though on Wednesday based on Dismal's record against the top six or his selection or his tactics or.......

My grandkids had a great day out though and yes the 13 year old did have a taste of Grandad's IPA as well.

Ponyqueta and Scamacca are both looking like expensive flops at the moment.

I still hold some hope that Scamacca comes good, but by golly his finishing is poor. Expect so much more for the price.

You love an attacking player who has got ZERO goals and assists for the club in 10 games since he was signed on a record transfer fee?

Sums up your LOSER mentality, son.
